The Union House bears Jeff Tuttle’s name because about two
decades ago Jeff conceived the idea of making an old service
station over into a beer garden, deli, and community center.
When he became DA over ten years ago he did not feel it right for
the county’s chief law enforcement officer to be running a bar.
So he leased, and then sold the property, which fell upon hard
times, and was taken back by Jeff’s widow (Jeff having died in
April) in foreclosure.
Jeff was a devoted and ever-loyal son of Mokelumne Hill, having
arrived in the grammar school when he was nine years old, quickly
making life-long friends like Phil McCartney and Bob Garamendi.
There are a number of reasons to make Moke Hill your destination:
from Gold Rush era history to our great hotel – originally
established in 1851 – with comfortable period furnished rooms, an
historic saloon for casual dining, and an award-winning dining
room with California cuisine, banquet facility, billiard room,
swimming pool, and garden for weddings and events, including live
music on alternate Saturdays.
In addition to the hotel, Mokelumne Hill boasts a beautiful park,
with new playground arrriing soon, two excellent lighted tennis
courts, ball diamond, horse arena, an elementary school noted for
its achievements, a fine library, and the Union House Beer Garden
and Restaurant, all in a tiny town imbued with the most unique
and friendly community spirit.
